District 01 · Infrastructure

Standards are the infrastructure of mobility.

More than 10,000 active SAE standards define how mobility systems are designed, tested and understood — written and maintained by the engineers who use them.

01Development

The standards pipeline

SAE standards are developed by voluntary consensus. The process is deliberate, documented and open to qualified contributors.

  1. 01

    Committee formation

Technical committees are formed around a discipline or system area and staffed by volunteer engineers.

  2. 02

    Drafting

Members draft the document, drawing on engineering practice and technical literature.

  3. 03

    Consensus review

The draft is balloted and revised until the committee reaches voluntary consensus.

  4. 04

    Publication & maintenance

The standard is published and periodically reviewed so it stays aligned with practice.

02Coverage

Three industries, one method

Aerospace

Standards covering aerospace materials, systems and components.

Automotive

Ground vehicle standards spanning design, testing and vehicle systems.

Commercial Vehicle

Standards for on-highway and off-highway commercial vehicle engineering.

03Participate

Join a technical committee

Committee work is the most direct way to shape the documents your industry runs on. Contributors bring practice, evidence and review capacity.
